Will owning the printer pay for itself?

This tool estimates the cost of making one part. The separate buy-versus-outsource guide compares equipment investment against a real service quote.

This handoff excludes printer purchase depreciation, because the guide counts equipment as an upfront cost. Failed attempts are included. The guide uses USD; when transferring another currency, you can enter your own conversion rate. No live exchange rates are fetched.

Estimates for guidance only. For best accuracy, use your slicer’s reported weight and time, and confirm current marketplace fees before pricing.

Notes and assumptions

How this calculator works — and how to get the most accurate number

Use slicer figures for a more reliable print cost

The calculator uses the assumptions you enter. STL-derived weight and duration are approximations, not a slicer simulation. For better estimates, copy material usage and estimated print time from Cura, Bambu Studio, PrusaSlicer or Lychee. Both fields are editable, and real consumption can differ from slicer predictions.

Small parts can read low

The automatic weight estimate uses a general infill formula. On small or thin parts, walls and top/bottom layers dominate, so the real weight can be higher than the estimate — which would make you price too low. Always confirm against your slicer for small items.

Print time is the roughest guess

The “estimate time from model” button is a ballpark based on volume or height only. Actual time depends heavily on print speed, layer height and geometry, so treat it as a placeholder and replace it with your slicer’s reported time whenever you can.

Volume is measured, not guessed

Part volume is calculated from the STL triangle geometry, and should be treated as reliable only for a correctly scaled, watertight model. Open, overlapping or non-manifold surfaces can produce incorrect results. Repair your STL and confirm dimensions before using the estimate.

Marketplace fees change — verify them

Illustrative editable defaults, not verified live fees: Etsy ≈ 9.5% + $0.45 (6.5% + 3%+$0.25 + $0.20 listing), Amazon Handmade 15%, eBay ≈ 13.25% + $0.30, Shopify 2.9% + $0.30. Etsy Offsite Ads add 12–15% on attributed sales only, and some regions add a small ~0.25% regulatory fee. Marketplaces change fees periodically — confirm in your seller dashboard. Every fee field is editable.

Resin includes additional consumables

Resin mode counts resin plus supports, IPA wash, FEP film wear, wash and cure energy, and treats the LCD screen as a separate consumable (~2,000 h) since it wears far faster than the machine body — costs most simple calculators ignore.

Failure buffer is deliberately safe

The failure allowance assumes each failed attempt consumes the modeled material, energy and printing time. Actual failed jobs may stop early or take longer to recover from; enter a realistic failure rate and compare results against your history.

Guidance, not financial advice

This is an illustrative costing model, not a guarantee of profitability. STL analysis is performed locally in your browser; the tool does not send the file to a server. Validate real material usage, local taxes, processing fees, packing and shipping before publishing a selling price.

3D printing cost calculator: common questions

How do I calculate the cost of a 3D print?

Enter the filament or resin used, material price, electricity rate, machine time, maintenance allowance and hands-on labour. Add a realistic failure rate. Compare the estimate with your own completed jobs.

Can I estimate 3D print cost from an STL file?

Yes. Open an STL in the tool for a geometric starting point, but confirm material usage and print duration with your slicer before quoting. An STL alone does not contain final slicing settings.

Does the calculator work with resin 3D printers?

Yes. Switch to RESIN mode to include support resin, washing solvent, FEP film, LCD wear, wash/cure energy and other costs you can edit.

How do I calculate a selling price for 3D printed items?

Enable selling, select a marketplace and enter the actual fees and desired markup. The suggested price is only a scenario; packaging, shipping, refunds, taxes and market demand may change your real profit.
