Is the Bambu Lab P1S the right 3D printer for you?
If you want a ready-built enclosed printer for household parts, prototypes and small batches, the P1S suits you, and owners stay happy with it long after the first print. Before you buy, read the unexplained safety reports and find it a well-ventilated room of its own, because it is loud.
- You want to turn downloadable designs into organizers and household parts without building a printer from a kit.[1][2]
- You can give the printer a separate, ventilated spot where its fans will not disturb sleep or work.[3]
- You mainly print common plastics and will test fit or strength before relying on a part.[4][5]
- You'd rather follow guided steps than modify the printer's control software.[6]
- You can inspect prints, replace wear parts and plan around an occasional failed job.[7][8]
- You need a quiet machine beside your bed or at an occupied desk.[3]
- You must produce safety-certified, clinical or high-load parts with validated repeatability.[9][10]
- You require a fully isolated or audited network installation with unrestricted third-party control.[11][6]
- You need resin-like fine detail, industrial full-color output or one-piece objects bigger than the print area.[4][12]
- You can't accept an unexplained safety report where the printer will run or near the people around it.[13][14]
Should you buy the Bambu Lab P1S?
Short jobs finish briskly, everyday upkeep stays manageable and single-color running costs stay low.
Why it earns a look
- Printing on day one: it arrives largely assembled, then runs its own bed-leveling and vibration checks.[4][2]
- Fast on short jobs: Tom's Hardware's test boat took about 18 minutes at 500 mm/s, against 26 at normal speed.[15]
- Room for 256 mm parts: 256 × 256 × 256 mm inside an enclosed frame.[4]
- Everyday and tougher plastics: PLA and PETG for routine work, plus TPU, ABS and ASA, with a hotend (the part that melts the plastic) that reaches 300 °C.[4][5]
- Owners stay glad: one reported more than 1,300 hours; another ran two machines to about 1,820 and 1,817 hours.[16][17]
- Designs ready, color later: many models on MakerWorld, Bambu's free library, come with P1S settings, and an AMS (automatic filament switcher) can be added later.[1][18]
Two owners reported serious incidents: smoke and a melting-electronics smell from an idle printer after a long enclosed job, and a glass door that shattered while the printer was idle, after which a child was cut by a fragment. Neither cause has been found, and nobody knows whether they apply to new units. Two more owners reported an electrical fire or burning component, one shortly after a print and one during printing; their causes are not established either.[13][14][19][20]
What we can't tell you
- How often a P1S fails or has a safety incident: no source measures a rate.
- How long a P1S lasts: no study measures it, and owner logs show what's possible, not the average.
- How typical the happy owner stories are: most come from brand-focused communities, where satisfied owners post more.
Is the Bambu Lab P1S right for your use-case?
Pick what you'd actually make to see the evidence-backed answer, with no scoring and no sales pitch. There are 52 use-cases, from a first 3D printer to building-scale extrusion, sorted from strong fits to poor ones. Every answer assumes you have settled the safety reports above. Each card is labeled with its evidence tier. Tier A means first-hand use of the P1S by owners or organizations; Tier B means reviews, tests on a closely related model, or official and technical guidance.
A good place to learn and make everyday plastic objects; plan for fan noise and a ventilated location. Two children in one beginner family printed about 30 small toys in their first ten days, and a six-month first-time owner calls the workflow beginner-friendly. Keep your first evening free for setup.[21][22]
Tier A evidenceCheck current price on Bambu Lab US StoreMakerWorld offers a convenient design-to-print route; you still choose the material and settings. Owners open a MakerWorld model in Bambu Studio and often find a profile already prepared for the P1S, so a first project can take a couple of clicks. A ready profile is a starting point, not a guarantee.[1][178]
Tier A evidenceCheck current price on Bambu Lab US StoreHolders, hooks and organizers suit the build area; measure the device before trusting a mount. Owners print hooks, stands, organizers and shop hardware on the P1S and describe it as a printer that just works for this kind of part. These pieces rarely come close to the 256 mm limit.[129][179]
Tier A evidenceCheck current price on Bambu Lab US StoreClips and brackets work after test-fitting and checking load and temperature needs. Owners document functional builds, such as a complete game-controller case printed on the P1S. Pick the plastic for the load and heat the part will face, and print a test piece first.[128]
Tier A evidenceCheck current price on Bambu Lab US StoreAn easier setup and workflow for owners who value finished parts over constant adjustment. Owners who moved from older kit printers such as Creality's Ender call the switch a game changer; one reports about 5,000 hours across two units with only routine maintenance.[129][180]
Tier A evidenceCheck current price on Bambu Lab US StoreWith the optional AMS spool changer; more color changes mean more wasted plastic. Reviewers' multicolor test prints came out well through the AMS, but color-dense designs waste noticeable filament, and TPU and some cardboard spools don't feed reliably through it. Budget for the AMS or a Combo bundle.[29][164]
Tier A evidenceCheck current price on Bambu Lab US StoreAn adult must manage the hot machine, airflow and small detachable parts; check each printed toy for child safety. In one family, two children printed about 30 small toys in ten days with a parent running the printer. Stick to PLA, ventilate the room and keep printed toys away from young children's mouths.[21][132]
Tier A evidenceCheck current price on Bambu Lab US StoreIdeal for trays and organizers; measure the box, pieces and stacking clearance. Several board-game hobbyists print inserts and organizers on the P1S, and one calls it a dream printer for the job. Print one tray first to check that the lid still closes.[130][131]
Tier A evidenceCheck current price on Bambu Lab US StoreWorks within the print volume; the optional color changer produces distinct color bands. A reviewer printed smooth multicolor filament-painting pictures through the AMS, and a lab review found multicolor printing straightforward. Color still costs time and purge waste (plastic flushed out at every color change), and taller pieces must be split.[15][46]
Tier B evidenceCheck current price on Bambu Lab US StoreLayered plastic suits game boards and scenery; very fine detail needs a separate check. A specialist reviewer found this printer family excellent for printing large terrain fast. The test used the sibling P1P, which has the same motion system, and terrain files are published as tested on the P1S.[140][141]
Tier B evidenceCheck current price on Bambu Lab US StoreSmall custom parts fit well, with measurement and tolerance tests before daily use. Owners have printed full keycap sets and complete keyboard cases on the P1S. Print one keycap and check that it fits snugly on the switch before committing to a full set.[159][160]
Tier A evidenceCheck current price on Bambu Lab US StoreBed-sized components are useful; finishing, assembly and a material check add work. A commercial prop studio lists the P1S for small load-bearing components, and a documented prop replica used the AMS for colored buttons and accents. Anything over 256 mm must be printed in parts.[139][181]
Tier A evidenceCheck current price on Bambu Lab US StoreFast shape tests are useful; optional color changes cannot match industrial full-color accuracy. In independent tests the standard test boat took 18 minutes at top speed and 26 at normal speed with little visible difference, and multicolor appearance models came out well. Each extra color adds time and flushed-out plastic.[15][46]
Tier B evidenceCheck current price on Bambu Lab US StoreWith the optional AMS; price discarded plastic and print time into each order. A small-shop owner says the AMS made more intricate two-color products possible, and a print-farm veteran calls a P1S with AMS almost a turnkey starter kit. On small items with many swaps, the plastic flushed out at each color change can outweigh the part.[123][182]
Tier A evidenceCheck current price on Bambu Lab US StorePossible, but finishing and color swaps add time and waste. An owner printing color lithophanes (thin photo panels that show an image when backlit) with four-color CMYK PLA says they glow like a printed photo when lit from behind. Lithophane generators also offer P1S profiles. These are slow, multi-hour prints, so time per piece limits output.[183][184]
Tier A evidenceCheck current price on Bambu Lab US StoreA workable creation-and-sharing route; creator income is not guaranteed. One forum user earns at least two gift cards a month from MakerWorld points, but regular points have no cash value and larger payouts depend on exclusive programs. Treat headline creator earnings as marketing.[185][186]
Tier A evidenceCheck current price on Bambu Lab US StoreAn AMS can be bought and connected later; budget for the accessory and check compatibility. Bambu documents an official path for adding an AMS 2 Pro to an existing P1S, including the extra buffer, cable and tubing it needs. Follow the connection guide closely: a wrongly inserted cable can damage the boards.[18][187]
Tier A evidenceCheck current price on Bambu Lab US StoreBrackets and prototypes serve a team well, with part testing and material upgrades where needed. Robotics team members describe the P1S as their season workhorse, and one team lab runs three P1S printers for prototypes and competition parts in PLA and PETG. Carbon-fiber parts need the hardened set first.[146][188]
Tier A evidenceCheck current price on Bambu Lab US StoreMakerspaces run multiple units; shared access needs training and maintenance routines. Asmbly, an Austin makerspace, runs five P1S machines, requires a class first and bans abrasive filaments on stock nozzles, and school districts use the P1S in their makerspaces. Plan training alongside the hardware.[24][155]
Tier A evidenceCheck current price on Bambu Lab US StoreFans and fast moves remain audible; use a separate room if quiet work or sleep matters. Owners describe it as too loud to sit beside, and some schedule long jobs for when they are out of the room. Light sleepers should plan a separate, closed room.[189][190]
Tier A evidenceWeather-resistant plastics work, but large prints can warp because the enclosure is not actively heated. Owners print ASA car-interior and garden parts that held up in summer heat and find ABS and ASA easy at modest sizes. Big or tall parts still warp, so ventilate and keep pieces compact.[124][135]
Tier A evidenceTPU feeds from the rear spool, not the AMS; check stretch, seal and fit on the finished part. A lab test and owners confirm TPU prints from the rear spool, including a working replacement gasket. Print it slowly and expect rougher surfaces than with rigid plastics.[124][125]
Tier A evidenceInspect condition, maintenance history and support transfer before comparing with a new unit. A 2026 buying guide says a used P1S is worth it only when the discount meaningfully changes the math. Used prices of $300–$350 sit close to the new standalone price. Ask for the maintenance history.[191][192]
Tier B evidenceThe stock camera is too slow for smooth footage; add an external camera. Creators have made months of video content with the P1S, but the built-in camera captures 1280 × 720 at 0.5 frames per second, one image every two seconds.[15][44]
Tier A evidencePanels and pieces are feasible; anything bigger than the bed must be split, joined and finished. A commercial prop shop uses the P1S for small load-bearing components of its armor replicas. Full-size helmets and large armor pieces must be printed in sections, then glued, sanded and painted.[139]
Tier A evidenceMassing blocks and presentation pieces work; larger models need assembly. An architecture school's print lab runs a fleet of P1S printers for student models. Large site models must be split at the 256 mm limit and assembled.[127][158]
Tier A evidenceJigs, housings and brackets are sensible trial parts; large high-temperature pieces can distort. Tom's Hardware printed working nylon gears on the P1S after slowing the outer walls to fix weak layer bonds, and an owner made a strong spindle mount in nylon. Dry nylon well and expect large parts to warp.[15][122]
Tier A evidenceBudget for a hardened P1S extruder gear set and nozzle before using carbon- or glass-filled filament. Bambu's own guide says carbon-fiber filament needs a hardened hotend and steel extruder gears on the P1S. Owners who made the swap on P1-series printers report a year of printing carbon-fiber-filled PETG (PETG-CF) without trouble.[150][193]
Tier A evidenceSoft mounts and standard-plastic housings work; impact and load safety need testing. A model-aviation magazine printed lightweight airplane parts on the P1S, and RC owners feed TPU from the external spool rather than the AMS. Add the hardened upgrade before any carbon-fiber frame.[147][194]
Tier A evidenceSome parts are plausible, but outdoor-use evidence for the P1S is limited. Anglers print lures, mounts and tackle parts on Bambu printers, and lure files carry Bambu-tuned PETG settings, but none of this evidence names the P1S itself. Test any lure in water before relying on it.[195][196]
Tier B evidenceHolders and parts that never touch the mouth are fine; a reusable mouthpiece needs separate safety validation. A musician printed an entire MIDI instrument frame on the P1S, which only just fit, and pedal builders print test stands in PETG. Treat a printed mouthpiece as unvalidated, whatever the filament.[161][197]
Tier A evidencePrecise fit and clutch strength are not guaranteed; tune dimensions and test compatibility. One builder suggests the 0.2 mm nozzle and adjusting the model's scale until bricks snap together and hold properly. Expect calibration effort and a tighter or looser fit than molded bricks.[198]
Tier A evidenceA practical small-shop machine; build failed prints, inspection and downtime into your delivery plan. A print-farm veteran calls a P1S with AMS almost a turnkey starter kit for online sellers, and a small-shop review lists fixtures, brackets and replacement pieces as good jobs. The same thread warns some motion parts may wear before 5,000 hours.[123][152]
Tier A evidenceOperators run multiple units, but reliability is rated Limited: plan spares, staffing and quality checks. One operator runs eight P1S printers with AMS units and plans to reach 20. The catch: a six-printer limit for sending jobs from one account, and three printers per 16 A circuit. Another warns some motion parts may wear before 5,000 hours.[123][154]
Tier A evidenceOrcaSlicer works through specific local-network settings; check firmware and control trade-offs. OrcaSlicer, a popular free slicer, can still control the printer on newer firmware, but only in LAN-only and Developer modes, which give up cloud printing and automatic AMS spool reading. Owners call the workaround livable, not a fix.[199][200]
Tier A evidenceLocal-control options exist, but security policy and firmware practices can rule it out. One owner isolated a P1S on a separate smart-device network with no internet access and reports it works well. Bambu's own answer for offline printing is the SD card or LAN-only mode. Some IT teams will still reject it.[11][175]
Tier A evidenceSome local monitoring and commands work with third-party tools; updates may change access. A Home Assistant integration (a popular smart-home platform) keeps reading printer status. It regains full control once the printer is in LAN and Developer modes, at the cost of Bambu's cloud features. The slow camera keeps visual checks basic.[174][201]
Tier A evidenceLocal and microSD routes exist; assess radio, account and update-policy constraints first. Owners run the P1S cut off from the internet in LAN-only and Developer modes, printing from the free OrcaSlicer program. You then update firmware by SD card and give up the phone app and cloud features.[174][175]
Tier A evidenceTeach with ordinary plastics, with adult supervision, ventilation and a material policy. School districts run makerspaces built mainly around the P1S, printing ordinary plastics under supervision. The enclosure and carbon filter alone don't make a classroom safe, so ventilation is part of the plan.[155]
Tier A evidenceUseful for prototypes, not automatically safe or validated assistive devices. e-NABLE's own guidelines say these devices are experimental, not evaluated by any regulator, and that volunteers should involve a qualified health care provider. Work through such a community rather than alone.[202]
Tier B evidenceNo validated food-contact process exists for the machine or ordinary prints; clean-looking plastic is not certified. Peer-reviewed studies found bacteria build up on printed surfaces over time and recommend single use or regular disinfection, with a food-grade coating giving the best result. Reused food tools should be certified.[169][170]
Tier B evidencePrintability says nothing about chewing safety or hygiene; fragment and material risks need dedicated validation. Toy-safety rules cover small parts and mechanical strength, not just chemicals, and printed layers can split into choking-size fragments. Buy certified, tested chew toys and baby items instead.[203][204]
Tier B evidenceNo validated medical-device process or certification. The FDA treats 3D-printed medical devices as regulated devices that need design controls, validated processes and suitable materials, which a desktop printer setup cannot supply on its own.[9][171]
Tier B evidenceTraceability, validation and duty requirements go beyond what the P1S evidence supports. Aerospace and automotive end-use parts call for lot-traceable materials, documented process validation and industrial heated-chamber machines. A desktop printer can make fit-check prototypes for such parts, not the certified parts themselves.[10][205]
Tier B evidenceUse a qualified industrial process for certified or heavy-duty tooling; this machine is for bench trials. Manufacturing services note that most desktop printers lack the power and efficiency for industrial tooling. One startup kept its two P1S printers at the prototype bench while real tooling moved to industrial machines.[206][207]
Tier A evidenceHardened upgrades may allow trials, but controlled high-volume output is not established. Owners report both success with nylon-carbon blends and repeated warping with glass-filled nylon on the same model, so results depend on material and part shape. That is not a basis for production.[151][208]
Tier A evidenceNozzle and chamber temperatures fall short of what this polymer class requires. PEEK-class plastics need extrusion at roughly 350–450 °C and a heated chamber of 100 °C or more; the P1S tops out at 300 °C and has no chamber heater.[167][168]
Tier B evidenceFine castable resin and burnout requirements call for a different process. Jewelry casting relies on castable resin printed in very fine layers. PLA, by contrast, can leave ash that pits the cast, and its layer lines are hard to sand off a small ring.[209][210]
Tier B evidenceFilament swaps cannot produce continuously blended full-color surfaces. Multicolor filament printing produces separate spot colors by swapping filament, while true full-color mockups need material-jetting machines that mix colors digitally. Use the P1S for shape and fit, not final color.[12][211]
Tier B evidenceOffline printing alone does not prove the printer meets a strict disconnected-site policy. Bambu's official answer for offline work is the SD card or LAN-only mode, but the Wi-Fi radio stays built in. Bambu's X1E, with a removable Wi-Fi module, is the model aimed at such sites.[11][176]
Tier A evidenceThe control software is more closed than a firmware tinkerer will want. The P1S has no mature custom-firmware project, and one prominent owner runs his offline on frozen firmware while criticizing Bambu's approach. LAN-only and Developer modes, settings that keep the printer on your home network, are workarounds, not openness.[174][212]
Tier A evidenceDesktop plastic printing does not replace construction-scale equipment. Construction printing pushes concrete through large nozzles on gantries or robots, a different material, machine class and scale. The P1S can print scale models of buildings, not the buildings themselves.[213][214]
Tier B evidenceIs the Bambu Lab P1S worth it? For everyday PLA and PETG objects, design prototypes, small batches and supervised teaching projects, yes, if you can give it a separate, ventilated room. Decide first whether the unexplained safety reports are acceptable where you will use it. Walk away if you need a quiet machine beside your bed or desk, you need certified, clinical or high-load parts, or you can't accept unresolved safety and reliability reports.
How the Bambu Lab P1S rates in nine fit areas
// How to read the nine fit areas
To judge the P1S as a whole, we sorted the evidence into nine fit areas, from who it suits to its software and support. Their first letters spell I·S·I·T·F·O·R·M·E — is it for me? Hover over a card, or tap it on a touch screen, to see how we rated it.
How can owners be happy while reliability is rated Limited? Because the two ratings answer different questions. Owner satisfaction asks whether the people who live with the printer like it, and plenty clearly do. Reliability asks what happens when something goes wrong, and here a failure can stop the machine outright, while some reports involve smoke, fire or injury. No source can tell you how often either happens. In one line: owners stay happy, but the reliability problems are real. The ratings reflect evidence gathered through mid-2026.[13][14]
// Research scope
Who is it for?
Motivated beginners and repeat makers.
A first-time owner finished a real project on the first try, and makerspaces and small sellers use it too. Someone who prints only occasionally may be better served by a cheaper machine.
Speed, specs and setup
Quick to set up and fast on short jobs, but loud.
Tom's Hardware printed the test boat in about 18 minutes at 500 mm/s; the camera takes one image every two seconds, and owners hear it working.
Everyday problems
Ordinary chores, no heavier than its peers.
Clogs, first-layer grip and stringing have known fixes; repeated silent mid-print stops have been linked to the supplied microSD card.
Better buy than the P2S?
Only if the price gap matters more than conveniences.
In Bambu's November 3, 2026 sale the P1S was $349 and the P2S $449 (regularly $399 and $549). The P2S adds a touchscreen, a far better camera and AI checks with the same build volume.
What can you make?
Everyday plastic parts, prototypes and small batches.
PLA and PETG objects, design prototypes and teaching projects fit well; large ASA, nylon or polycarbonate parts and pieces over 256 mm need extra work.
Do owners stay happy?
Yes, well beyond the first print.
One owner reported just over 1,000 print hours and called it a favorite purchase, though most praise comes from brand-focused communities rather than a balanced sample.
Failures and safety
Serious safety reports remain unexplained.
Smoke from an idle printer and a shattered glass door have no known cause, and two more owners reported electrical fires. Hardware faults have stopped some machines, while others have run past 1,800 hours.
What does it cost to run?
No hidden mandatory costs for single-color printing.
A PLA print averaging about 105 W costs roughly two cents an hour at $0.186/kWh, while filament, wear parts and any AMS add more.
Software and control
Polished and easy, but restricted for outside tools.
MakerWorld, Bambu Studio and the Handy app make first prints simple; third-party control needs Developer Mode, which drops parts of the cloud feature set.
Who gets the most from a P1S?
The 60-second verdict
StrongHow to read this ratingThis rating shows how clearly we can say who this printer is for, and how well it serves those people. A lower rating means it suits fewer kinds of buyers, or it's harder to say who it suits. It doesn't mean the printer is bad.
The fit is clear. One first-time owner's success is well documented, and gift recipients, small businesses and shared workshops add smaller but consistent support. We stopped at Strong rather than Excellent for two reasons: no group gets a standout advantage, and many of the accounts come from brand-focused communities rather than a balanced sample of owners. If your plans look like these examples, put the P1S on your shortlist. Then judge it on what you'll print, where it will live, how reliable it is and what it costs to run.[17][23][24]
Picture someone with a list of things to make: a broken clip, a desk organizer, a gift. They'd rather start this weekend than spend a month building a kit. That's the P1S buyer. It's enclosed, with walls and a door around the printing area, so it suits you if you'd rather have a tidy box than an open frame on your desk. The strongest story comes from a first-time owner who set out to make something real, and did. Stories from gift recipients, small businesses and shared workshops fill in the rest.[23][25]
Is the Bambu Lab P1S good for beginners?
Yes, as long as you're happy to learn the basics rather than skip them. Before anything prints, slicing software turns a 3D design into instructions for the machine. It can also add temporary supports under overhanging parts. One first-time owner went through exactly that process and got a personalized model that came out right on the very first try.[23][25][26][27][28]
Independent reviewers recommend the P1S to beginners. Other guides point occasional users toward something cheaper and simpler, such as Bambu's open-frame A1. So the real question isn't "am I a beginner?" It's "will I actually use this every week?" If the honest answer is no, being new to this is no reason to pay for an enclosure.[15][29][30][31]
A good gift for someone who already wants the hobby
People do receive the P1S as a present, including some who had never printed before. It's a lovely gift for an adult who has asked for a printer and already has a list of projects. For someone who's only vaguely curious, it may end up as a very expensive shelf ornament.[31][32][33][34]
Print farms and makerspaces need different plans
If you're running a small business, a P1S print farm is a reasonable plan, not a guarantee of uptime. One operator reported running two P1S printers for about 1,800 hours each. A print-farm writer with more than 100 machines (not all of them P1S units) treats it as a production option. Before you buy printer number three, work out how many days of interrupted production your orders can survive.[17][35]
Shared workshops have a different problem: lots of people need to use the same machines the same way. Asmbly, a makerspace in Austin, runs five P1S printers, asks members to take a class first and bans abrasive filaments on the standard nozzles. In a shared space, training and clear rules are part of what you're buying.[24]
Who should look elsewhere?
Skip the P1S if taking the machine apart and modifying it is the whole fun for you. One owner's attempt to convert a P1S into an X1 ran into software and firmware locks. It's also an odd choice if you want the newest generation of hardware. Neither of these affects everyday printing.[36][37][38][39]
Think twice, too, if you want the lowest possible price or expect to print only the odd weekend. One owner sold a barely used combo (the printer bundled with the AMS color system) because it hardly got used. And if you need to print overnight next to your bed, know that owners describe the P1S as loud.[32][40]
Will the P1S be fast enough, and quiet enough, for where it lives?
The 60-second verdict
MixedHow to read this ratingThis rating compares what Bambu advertises with what the printer actually does, and shows how easy it is to get started. A lower rating means results below the promise or a harder setup. It doesn't mean the printer is faulty.
Speed on real short jobs, easy setup and support for common materials all meet the standard for this class. We rate it Mixed because of two drawbacks the evidence keeps repeating: the noise and the slow camera. Look elsewhere, or budget for extras, if you need quiet operation in a shared space, live monitoring, hardware ready for abrasive filament or a bigger build area.[2][29][3][41]
The P1S comes mostly assembled, does a lot of its own calibration and gets through short test prints quickly. Two things the spec sheet won't tell you, though: you will hear it working, and its built-in camera behaves more like an occasional snapshot than a live video feed.[2][15][3][41]
Does 500 mm/s tell you how long a print takes?
No. The 500 mm/s Bambu advertises is how fast the print head can travel, not how fast a finished object appears. The head has to speed up, slow down for corners and melt plastic quickly enough to keep pace. Tom's Hardware put that to the test with the standard test boat, a "Benchy" sliced to fixed contest settings. The P1S finished it in about 18 minutes at 500 mm/s and 26 minutes at normal speed.[4][15][42]
When you're on your fifth version of a prototype, shorter waits really add up. A test boat says nothing about long jobs or about beating rival printers, though, so if you print to sell, time your actual part.[42][43]
P1S setup is approachable, but the first print still teaches you something
You take out the transport restraints, fit a few parts and let the printer run its automatic checks. Bed leveling prepares the print surface so the first layer goes down well, and vibration calibration compensates for movement that could leave ripples.[2] One owner reckoned unboxing and setup take about 10–15 minutes if you don't stop to film it; a hands-on reviewer needed closer to 45.[44][45]
You'll still need to learn how to load filament and prepare a model, and a few owners hit loading or calibration hiccups along the way. Keep your first evening free, and don't plan a deadline around it.[46][47][48][49][50]
Start with ordinary plastics, then check the exceptions
For everyday projects, start with PLA, the common, easy-going plastic, or PETG, which is a little tougher. The P1S hotend, the part that melts the filament, reaches 300 °C, so the printer also handles flexible TPU and the heat-resistant ABS and ASA. A hot nozzle won't stop a large ABS or ASA part from warping as it cools, though.[4][5][29]
Two limits are worth knowing:
- Abrasive filament needs tougher parts. Filament filled with carbon or glass fiber wears down the standard stainless parts, so Bambu recommends swapping in a hardened steel nozzle, sold as a complete hotend, and hardened steel gears in the extruder, the motor-driven gears that push filament into the hotend.
- The enclosure isn't heated. It has vents and fans, but no heater of its own.
If you're printing organizers and simple prototypes, you'll probably never notice either one. If you're buying for abrasive materials or large heat-resistant parts, price the extra hardware first.[4][5][51][52][53]

Manufacturer specifications from Bambu's store page, spec sheet and P1-series documentation.[4][5][41]
The max print size, about 10 inches in each direction, is the space for a single printed object, not the size of the machine. On the outside, the P1S dimensions are about 38.9 × 38.9 × 45.8 cm (15.3 × 15.3 × 18 inches). Leave room around it so you can reach the spool at the back, open the door and add any accessories.
A camera for checking in, not for watching every layer
The P1S camera takes one picture every two seconds. That's enough to glance at progress, not to watch a smooth video, and the standard camera can't be trusted to spot failures on its own. Owners who want a constant view add an outside camera. Want to check from the sofa whether a job has stopped? It does that fine. Want to catch a problem the moment it starts on a long print? It won't.[41][54][55][56][57]
Can you work or sleep beside it?
Expect to hear fans and movement. To put a number on the P1S noise level, one small publication measured 52 dB during typical PLA printing and 58 dB during fast moves, from one meter away. Another review reported 55 dB or less under different conditions. These are separate measurements, so don't average them.[15][29][3]
In a garage or workshop, that's rarely a problem. In a bedroom or a shared office, it often is. Some owners have also reported squeaks, rattles and scraping, but those were faults to fix rather than the printer's normal sound.[58][59][60][61][62][63]
Know what's standard before you budget for extras
Out of the box, a P1S without AMS feeds one filament at a time. Since firmware 01.10 (March 2026), you can also swap the outside spool by hand partway through a print for simple multicolor jobs. Automatic multicolor printing needs the optional AMS (Automatic Material System), a separate unit that holds four spools; link several and you get up to 16 colors. The power ratings are maximums, not everyday use; the running-costs section gives a realistic figure.[4][5][41][64][65][66]
A print that looks smooth isn't automatically a print that fits. Thinner layers hide the stair-step effect, but they don't promise that mechanical pieces will fit together, and there's no large, carefully measured sample of P1S accuracy. If parts must fit exactly, test them with your own settings.[5][67][68]
Everyday problems are routine chores, with one silent stop to know about
The 60-second verdict
StrongHow to read this ratingThis rating shows how much extra day-to-day effort this particular model asks of you, compared with similar printers, when you use it the way it's meant to be used. Normal maintenance and things no printer of this kind can do don't lower it. Real breakdowns and safety problems are rated separately, under reliability and safety.
Across the owner reports we collected, most problems are the routine chores of any filament printer: a clog, a first layer that won't stick, a wrong setting. Nothing suggests the P1S needs more of this than similar machines. There's one interruption worth knowing about in advance, because it can ruin a long print without so much as a helpful error message.[69][71][7]
When a print stops without telling you why
Imagine starting a long print before bed and finding it frozen halfway through in the morning. In a discussion on Bambu's community forum, P1S owners described exactly that: prints that simply stopped. Sometimes the hot print head was left sitting on the object, with no clear error and no way to resume.
The usual suspect is the memory card. Several of them traced repeat stops to the microSD card that came with the printer, and switching to a name-brand card ended the problem for them. If your prints keep stopping for no obvious reason, try a name-brand card first. It's a cheap, quick test, though it won't fix a different underlying fault. And if a failed overnight print would cost you a deadline, check on it and leave time to recover.[41][71]
A clogged nozzle is a skill to learn, not a verdict on the machine
A clog blocks the nozzle or the gears that push plastic into it. One common cause is heat creep, when heat travels up from the nozzle and softens the filament too early. When you print PLA on the textured or high-temperature plates, Bambu suggests opening the front door, taking off the top cover, or both, to keep the inside cool. Official guides for other enclosed printers describe exactly the same kind of clog. In practice, if PLA keeps jamming in a warm room, try the open door before you blame the hotend.[69][72][7][73][74][75]
The first layer and surface finish take some trial and error
If the first layer, the plastic laid straight onto the plate, doesn't grip, the print can come loose halfway through and turn into a tangle. Before you suspect a mechanical fault, try the boring fixes first: clean the plate, then check your material settings and calibration.[70][76][77][78][79]
Thin wisps of plastic between parts of a print are called stringing, and a settings tweak usually fixes them. And before you blame the printer for a feeding problem, make sure the spool turns freely. One owner's mysterious "fault" turned out to be nothing more than a tangled spool.[80][81][82][83][84]
Keep accessory, software and hardware problems apart
Feeding problems in the AMS belong to the add-on, and problems caused by modifications belong to modified printers; neither says the base P1S needs extra care. Firmware and app issues are covered in the software section, and dead fans or replaced printers in the reliability section. In the same way, a large ABS part warping as it cools is a question of material and temperature on a printer without a chamber heater, not a recurring fault.[5][53][85][86][87][88][89][90][91]
Is the P1S still a better buy than the P2S?
The 60-second verdict
MixedHow to read this ratingThis rating shows what you give up for the price, and how well the decision holds up over time. A lower rating means weaker value for money or more compromises. It doesn't mean poor quality.
The evidence splits, and that's why we rate this Mixed. Buyers keep praising the P1S's value and owners keep using theirs, while others talk about selling up or preferring the P2S. If you already have a P1S that works, upgrade only to solve a problem you actually have. If you're buying new, weigh the price gap on the day against comforts you'd use on every print.[17][92][93][94][95][96][97][98]
The P1S is still a sensible way into enclosed printing, especially when it costs clearly less than the P2S. Some owners love theirs and recommend it; others say they'd pick the P2S if they were starting over, and people shopping now keep weighing the same choice. Both camps have a point, and which one you're in mostly comes down to money.[93][94][95][99]

P1S and P2S prices from Bambu's US store on November 3, 2026, during its Black Friday sale (October 27 to December 1); P2S hardware details from Bambu's launch announcement.[4][100][101][102]
The P2S prints parts of exactly the same size. What it adds is a smoother daily routine and much better monitoring. If the price gap on the day you order matters to your budget, and you won't miss those comforts, the P1S makes sense. Several Bambu-focused discussions recommend it for exactly that. If the discount is small, though, you may find yourself missing those extras on every single project.[92][99][103][104][105][106][107][108][109][110][111]
Make sure you compare like with like. In Bambu's Black Friday sale on November 3, 2026, the gap was $100 between the standalone printers ($349 against $449) and $140 between the AMS 2 Pro Combos ($509 against $649); at regular prices it is $150 and $170.[4][100]
Keeping one is not the same as buying one
A P1S that works can earn its keep for years, and owners say so. One owner described about two and a half years with theirs and planned to keep it next to a newer machine. Another logged about 4,000 hours across two P1S printers in roughly a year.[93][112][113][114]
Buying new today is a different decision. One owner said they would keep their P1S but buy a P2S if they were choosing now, because of everyday convenience rather than print quality.[94][106][107][108][109]
Can the purchase end in regret?
It can. One owner said they wouldn't buy from Bambu again. A would-be buyer worried about regretting a P1S once the P2S's comforts were available, and another owner sold their P1S while looking at a different printer. An extruder that failed early led one more owner to try to return theirs. These stories don't add up to a percentage. So ask yourself a simpler question: what would bug you more, an older-feeling interface every day, or knowing you spent more than you needed to?[17][95][96]
Software openness, bundles and used units
For some buyers, openness is the whole story. Bambu's all-in-one system keeps the printer, software and app working smoothly together, while more open rivals give you more freedom with outside tools. One buyer had second thoughts because of Bambu's software policies. If a particular third-party setup is essential to you, check that it works before you pay.[97][115][116]
Don't compare a standalone P1S with an offer that includes an AMS: the AMS, the AMS 2 Pro and the various combo deals are different packages. A used printer is a separate decision altogether, since unknown wear and seller terms make it a different proposition from the new machine covered here.[4][110][111][117][118][119][120][121]
Which projects can the P1S finish well—and which need another tool?
The 60-second verdict
StrongHow to read this ratingThis rating shows how well the printer handles the everyday jobs it's designed for. Specialist or out-of-scope jobs are listed separately and don't lower it. A lower rating means a documented weakness in its main purpose. Use the Fit Checker to look up your own project.
The P1S fits four well-supported core jobs: everyday PLA and PETG objects, design prototypes, small batches and teaching projects with standard materials. Large ASA prints, TPU parts that need a perfect finish, oversized props, big PC or nylon pieces and large architectural models are only partly covered. If one of those is your main reason to buy, give its limits more weight than this area's rating.[21][122][123][124][125][126][127]
If you need organizers, replacement parts, design prototypes or small batches, the P1S belongs on your shortlist. Before you hit print, ask two questions: what does the finished part have to fit, and what does it have to survive?[15][21][122]
Household projects: a good match, once you test the fit
PLA and PETG cover desk accessories, gadgets and hobby pieces without any extra hardware. A replacement clip, bracket, cable holder or headphone hook still has to fit the thing you're fixing. Printed plastic varies enough that a promising part may need a trial fit or two. The same goes for board-game organizers and trays: measure the box first, or you'll find out the hard way when the lid won't close.[21][22][23][45][128][129][130][131]
Single-color toys, gifts and decorations work too, often starting from MakerWorld, Bambu's design library. A design being shared online doesn't prove that a small detachable toy part, or the plastic it's made from, is safe for a child, so check that separately.[1][132][133][134]
When the plastic changes, the job changes
Outdoor brackets and garden fittings in ASA, a plastic that stands up to the weather, work well at small and medium sizes with good ventilation. Make the same part tall or wide and cooling can pull it out of shape, because the enclosure isn't heated. TPU suits soft mounts, cases and gaskets, but its flexibility makes clean surfaces and exact dimensions harder to get.[124][125][135][136][137][138]
Props and game terrain: print in pieces when necessary
Costume armor panels, stage props and wearable pieces are well within reach, as long as you enjoy sanding, gluing and painting. Anything bigger than the 256 mm print volume, a full-size helmet for example, has to be printed in sections. Tabletop terrain and scenery suit filament printing well; for the crisp fine detail of small resin-printed models, a resin printer is the specialist tool.[15][139][140][141][142][143][144][145]
Prototypes, batches and classrooms
For product design and engineering classes, the P1S is a natural prototyping machine: jigs (guides that hold a part steady while you work on it), fit-check parts, brackets, housings, and mounts for radio-controlled cars and robots. Large parts in polycarbonate (PC) or nylon (PA) are harder, because they warp and their layers bond poorly. Fiber-filled filaments need hardened parts that are not included with the base printer.[15][46][122][126][146][147][148][149][150][151]
Repeat runs of PLA or PETG fixtures make sense for a small shop, as long as you leave time to inspect parts and redo failed jobs. Makerspaces, libraries and schools use Bambu printers for teaching, and in those settings the printer is only one part of the plan, alongside supervision, training, ventilation and rules about materials.[123][152][153][154][155][156]
Display pieces and small accessories
Vases and single-color sculptures work well if you like seeing the layer lines, and architects can print useful pieces of scale models, splitting anything larger than the bed. Keyboard cases, keycaps and instrument mounts make good small projects. A reusable instrument mouthpiece doesn't, because nothing shows a printed item that goes in the mouth can be kept hygienically safe.[127][157][158][159][160][161][162][163]
Decorations and photo gifts
The P1S only prints in several colors with the optional AMS. With it, you can make multicolor decorations and lithophane photo gifts (pictures that appear when light shines through plastic of varying thickness), though not industrial full-color work. Price the AMS before you plan multicolor gifts or products.[29][164][165][166]
Specialist or regulated objects need a different answer
The P1S isn't built for industrial production parts, heavy-duty tooling or large volumes of abrasive composite material, and very high-temperature plastics such as PEEK are out of its reach. Anything that touches food, goes in the mouth or helps someone with a disability needs safety, hygiene or materials testing. Getting the shape to print is the easy part. Medical devices and firearm parts aren't covered by this guide. A finished print is not proof that something is safe or legal for regulated use.[162][167][168][169][170][9][171][172][173]
Some workplaces will turn the printer down because of how it's controlled. Offline use, third-party software and company network rules are covered in the software section below.[174][11][175][176][177]
The full fit matrix
A Works with limits answer isn't a ban: the catch, whether it's size, material, noise, accessory cost, supervision or control, simply belongs in your buying plan. A Not a fit answer is a sign to change the tool or the process, not to keep buying upgrades in the hope of a validated result. We give Strong fit only when the evidence supports the job without a major condition. The tier letter shows the kind of evidence: A mostly means first-hand use of the P1S, B mostly means reviews, a closely related model or general technical guidance.
| Use-case | Fit | Tier | Notes & alternative |
|---|---|---|---|
| A first 3D printer | Strong fit | A | A good place to learn and make everyday plastic objects; plan for fan noise and a ventilated location.[21][22] |
| Downloading ready-made projects | Strong fit | A | MakerWorld offers a convenient design-to-print route; you still choose the material and settings.[1][178] |
| Making desk and tech accessories | Strong fit | A | Holders, hooks and organizers suit the build area; measure the device before trusting a mount.[129][179] |
| Repairing everyday household items | Strong fit | A | Clips and brackets work after test-fitting and checking load and temperature needs.[128] |
| Replacing a tinkering-heavy printer | Strong fit | A | An easier setup and workflow for owners who value finished parts over constant adjustment.[129][180] |
| Multicolor decorative objects (with the AMS) | Strong fit | A | With the optional AMS spool changer; more color changes mean more wasted plastic.[29][164] |
| Simple toys and play pieces | Strong fit | A | An adult must manage the hot machine, airflow and small detachable parts; check each printed toy for child safety.[21][132] |
| Board-game storage inserts | Strong fit | A | Ideal for trays and organizers; measure the box, pieces and stacking clearance.[130][131] |
| Vases and sculptural decorations | Strong fit | B | Works within the print volume; the optional color changer produces distinct color bands.[15][46] |
| Game terrain and scenery | Strong fit | B | Layered plastic suits game boards and scenery; very fine detail needs a separate check.[140][141] |
| Keyboard cases and keycaps | Strong fit | A | Small custom parts fit well, with measurement and tolerance tests before daily use.[159][160] |
| Props for a theater workshop | Strong fit | A | Bed-sized components are useful; finishing, assembly and a material check add work.[139][181] |
| Developing product appearance mockups | Strong fit | B | Fast shape tests are useful; optional color changes cannot match industrial full-color accuracy.[15][46] |
| Selling multicolor home decor (with the AMS) | Strong fit | A | With the optional AMS; price discarded plastic and print time into each order.[123][182] |
| Layered photo gifts and signage | Strong fit | A | Possible, but finishing and color swaps add time and waste.[183][184] |
| Publishing designs on MakerWorld | Strong fit | A | A workable creation-and-sharing route; creator income is not guaranteed.[185][186] |
| Adding multicolor printing later | Strong fit | A | An AMS can be bought and connected later; budget for the accessory and check compatibility.[18][187] |
| Robotics competition parts | Strong fit | A | Brackets and prototypes serve a team well, with part testing and material upgrades where needed.[146][188] |
| A makerspace or shared workshop | Strong fit | A | Makerspaces run multiple units; shared access needs training and maintenance routines.[24][155] |
| Printing in a quiet bedroom | Works with limits | A | Fans and fast moves remain audible; use a separate room if quiet work or sleep matters.[189][190] |
| Outdoor brackets and garden fixtures | Works with limits | A | Weather-resistant plastics work, but large prints can warp because the enclosure is not actively heated.[124][135] |
| Flexible cases and seals | Works with limits | A | TPU feeds from the rear spool, not the AMS; check stretch, seal and fit on the finished part.[124][125] |
| Buying a used printer | Works with limits | B | Inspect condition, maintenance history and support transfer before comparing with a new unit.[191][192] |
| Documenting print projects on video | Works with limits | A | The stock camera is too slow for smooth footage; add an external camera.[15][44] |
| Large costume or stage props | Works with limits | A | Panels and pieces are feasible; anything bigger than the bed must be split, joined and finished.[139] |
| Scale architectural models | Works with limits | A | Massing blocks and presentation pieces work; larger models need assembly.[127][158] |
| Testing engineering prototypes | Works with limits | A | Jigs, housings and brackets are sensible trial parts; large high-temperature pieces can distort.[15][122] |
| Using fiber-filled abrasive plastic | Works with limits | A | Budget for a hardened P1S extruder gear set and nozzle before using carbon- or glass-filled filament.[150][193] |
| Remote-control vehicle accessories | Works with limits | A | Soft mounts and standard-plastic housings work; impact and load safety need testing.[147][194] |
| Fishing tackle and lure projects | Works with limits | B | Some parts are plausible, but outdoor-use evidence for the P1S is limited.[195][196] |
| Instrument mounts and accessories | Works with limits | A | Holders and parts that never touch the mouth are fine; a reusable mouthpiece needs separate safety validation.[161][197] |
| Interlocking plastic bricks | Works with limits | A | Precise fit and clutch strength are not guaranteed; tune dimensions and test compatibility.[198] |
| Selling small repeat batches | Works with limits | A | A practical small-shop machine; build failed prints, inspection and downtime into your delivery plan.[123][152] |
| Running a print farm | Works with limits | A | Operators run multiple units, but reliability is rated Limited: plan spares, staffing and quality checks.[123][154] |
| Using a third-party slicer | Works with limits | A | OrcaSlicer works through specific local-network settings; check firmware and control trade-offs.[199][200] |
| A company lab with strict IT rules | Works with limits | A | Local-control options exist, but security policy and firmware practices can rule it out.[11][175] |
| Smart-home integration | Works with limits | A | Some local monitoring and commands work with third-party tools; updates may change access.[174][201] |
| Local-network operation | Works with limits | A | Local and microSD routes exist; assess radio, account and update-policy constraints first.[174][175] |
| A supervised school printing station | Works with limits | A | Teach with ordinary plastics, with adult supervision, ventilation and a material policy.[155] |
| Volunteer assistive-device prototypes | Works with limits | B | Useful for prototypes, not automatically safe or validated assistive devices.[202] |

| Building-scale extrusion | Not a fit | B | Desktop plastic printing does not replace construction-scale equipment.[213][214] → Construction-scale concrete printing equipment |
Satisfaction lasts well past the first print
The 60-second verdict
ExcellentHow to read this ratingThis rating shows how owners feel after living with the printer. A lower rating means owners grow less satisfied over time, which is the most direct warning sign there is.
This is the only area rated Excellent, and the reason is consistent first-hand evidence: easy first prints and lasting satisfaction after heavy use each have several witnesses. Most of them come from brand-focused communities rather than a balanced sample, so read this as a strong endorsement rather than survey results. Loving a printer and trusting it never to fail are separate questions, which is where the next section comes in.[17][23][47][215]
The most reassuring evidence for the P1S isn't on its spec sheet. Owners describe two kinds of satisfaction: a useful first print without the struggle they'd braced for, and enjoyment that lasts through heavy use.[17][23][47]
New owners keep describing the same moment of surprise at how quickly they printed something useful. One hobbyist coming back to printing found an unmodified P1S better than expected. Others were pleased after moving up from older printers. Delighted new owners are the most likely to post, so take their excitement with a pinch of salt.[23][47][92][216]
Does the appeal survive real use?
As far as the evidence goes, yes, and for some owners well past the honeymoon. One owner reported just over 1,000 print hours with a high success rate by their own count and called it a favorite purchase. Another ran two printers to about 1,820 and 1,817 hours with few interruptions. A third shared a year of prints and called the P1S a delight after an older printer. The pattern holds across these accounts: the praise comes from people who print a lot, not just from first-week excitement. Still, these are owners' stories, not endurance tests.[17][112][217][218]
Store ratings add breadth, but they aren't a survey of every buyer. Standalone and combo listings mix different products, and a Trustpilot score rates Bambu Lab as a company, not this printer.[219]
Some owners have good reasons to be unhappy
One long discussion paints a less flattering picture: design irritations, firmware limits and poor service over about a year. Problems on modified machines are another matter. A six-month owner's repeated trouble with a 0.2 mm nozzle came alongside an aftermarket extruder. Setups built around third-party parts, or rebuilt with X1-series electronics, are different machines in practice. And choosing a different printer because it suits you better is just shopping, not a sign of unhappy owners.[17][36][116][220][221][222][223]
Recommendation threads also include people asking whether the P1S is still worth buying, and brand-focused groups naturally attract owners keen to defend their purchase.[99][224]
Unexplained safety reports remain, even though many P1S printers run for thousands of hours
The 60-second verdict
LimitedHow to read this ratingThis rating covers real failures and genuine safety hazards. A lower rating is serious: it means a documented defect or hazard you should weigh before buying.
This is a warning about two things: hardware failures that can halt your work, and serious safety incidents reported by owners. Nobody knows yet whether those incidents apply to new units. It sits alongside owners whose printers have run for thousands of hours. The lack of a measured failure rate doesn't prove the risk is low, or high. A well-run workshop with ventilation, a safe spot and a spare machine may still find the P1S a reasonable tool. A home where children can reach the glass door, or a business that can't absorb a sudden stoppage, has much less room for this uncertainty.[13][14][112][8][225]
A P1S can run for thousands of hours, yet the same reports include machines stopped dead by hardware faults and four serious safety incidents described by owners. This rating reflects how serious those outcomes are and how unclear their reach is. It does not mean most P1S printers fail.[16][13][14][226]
Long-running printers show what's possible, not your odds
No study measures how long a P1S lasts, but owners' logs make encouraging reading. One reported more than 1,300 hours; another ran two machines to about 1,820 and 1,817 hours. They show what's possible, not what's typical, and they can't cancel out another owner's broken part. Budget for maintenance and the occasional failed job.[16][17][112][116]
A failed component can stop work altogether
- Power electronics. One owner had voltage faults that got worse about six months in. Swapping several parts didn't help; a new AC board, the board that handles mains power, finally fixed it. Other sudden shutdowns may have other causes.[8]
- Storage and control board. One printer kept rejecting or corrupting memory cards even after support replaced its AP board, part of the control electronics. If a new card doesn't stop repeated stoppages, note down the symptoms and push for a proper diagnosis.[71][227]
- Won't start. A new owner got a filament-cutter error before the printer had even moved, and a replacement sensor didn't cure it.[228]
- Print head. A new cable brought one faulty print head back to life, and another owner found a damaged plug. Early head-board faults on the P1 series were tracked down through logs and replacement parts. One brand-new P1S lost its hotend fan after a day.[229][230][231][232][233]
Treat the first few weeks as a test drive. One unit stopped within hours and was replaced. Another sat waiting for a replacement control part. A third owner swapped boards, gears and cables before Bambu declared the printer dead on arrival and shipped a new one. Camera faults turn up too, though they don't stop printing. Before you promise anyone paid work, print the exact jobs you plan to deliver.[226][229][234][235]
Serious safety reports deserve a decision, not a guessed failure rate
The cause is unknown, and so is whether it affects new units. In the first report, an owner noticed smoke at the back of the idle printer after an eight-hour enclosed print, along with a smell of melting electronics. An inspection found no failed part, the event couldn't be repeated, and no cause was ever pinned down.[13]
In the second, the tempered-glass front door reportedly shattered while the printer was idle, and a child later cut a foot on a piece that was left behind. Nobody knows why the glass broke or whether the same could happen on current units. A door that arrived broken in shipping, and ended in a refund, is a separate matter and not a second case.[14][236]
Two more P1S owners described serious electrical incidents in the summer of 2025. In a post on July 26, one owner said the print head's circuit board caught fire near the power-cable connection shortly after a print finished. A smoke alarm went off, and afterwards the printer wouldn't turn on.[19]
In a post on August 14, another owner described black smoke and a burnt component near the AC board while the printer was still printing, with no error on screen. Bambu Lab replied publicly that it tracks these incidents and, going by support tickets, considers them very rare. It gave no numbers that would let anyone work out a rate.[20]
What's still unknown: nobody outside Bambu has confirmed which parts failed, why, or whether either problem could affect other units. Take these accounts seriously, even though they don't prove a model-wide defect or tell you how often it happens.
If you ever see smoke or smell burning electronics, turn the printer off and unplug it if you can do so safely. Don't use it again until support has checked it. Keep a working smoke alarm in the room where it prints.
A search of US, Canadian, Australian and European recall databases on July 23, 2026 found no recall or safety action specific to the P1S. A news check on November 3, 2026 found nothing new. That can't rule out risk, and Bambu's 2024 heatbed-cable recall concerned a different printer, the A1. Check the CPSC and your local regulator before you buy.[13][14][237]
Air quality deserves its own plan
Melting plastic can release ultrafine particles and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), especially with ABS. One owner's tests with a hobby sensor showed readings climbing during printing and jumping when the enclosure was opened, and indoor-air research backs up taking emissions seriously. The enclosure and its activated-carbon filter help, but on their own they don't make a bedroom or a classroom safe. If you'll print ABS anywhere near children or colleagues, sort out proper ventilation or extraction first.[4][238][239][240][241][242]
NIOSH, the US workplace-safety institute, lists ultrafine particles, volatile organic compounds, hot surfaces, moving parts and electrical faults among the hazards of 3D printing. Its advice includes good ventilation and filtering the air where it leaves the printer.[243]
Built-in safeguards help, but aren't a guarantee
Bambu says its firmware cuts power to the heaters when temperature readings look wrong. That happens within seconds if a sensor comes unplugged, and after a few minutes if the readings stop matching the heating effort. No independent test has confirmed these limits, so treat them as a safety net, not as permission to stop supervising the printer.
Bambu also sells a replacement heatbed signal cable for its X1 and P1 printers, and one X1 repair story describes the cable wearing from the bed's constant movement. If you're chasing a fault, it's worth a look, though it doesn't prove a P1S defect.[244][245][246]
A warranty helps after a failure; it can't erase the interruption
Bambu's policy offers a limited warranty with separate return and replacement windows, and shorter cover for wear parts. Fixes do happen: one owner had an AP board replaced under warranty, and another whose printer arrived with broken glass got a refund. Turnaround varies, though, and some owners only got a replacement after long rounds of troubleshooting. A warranty gets you a working printer back eventually; it won't get you your week back.
Remember, too, that AMS feeding problems aren't failures of the printer itself, and a job ruined by a power cut or a storage glitch doesn't necessarily mean a dead board.[225][226][234][236][247][248][249][250][251]
What will the P1S cost after you bring it home?
The 60-second verdict
StrongHow to read this ratingThis rating covers what the printer costs to buy, run, maintain and repair, plus any extras you must buy and any spending that locks you in to one brand. A lower rating means owning it costs more. It says nothing about what the printer can do.
For single-material printing, the purchase price, electricity and common parts give you no big reason to pass on the basic P1S. Strong doesn't mean cheapest: compare today's checkout price, estimate how much plastic you'll use, and add multicolor or specialist upgrades only for jobs you'll really do.
For the basic P1S, the purchase price, electricity and the parts you'll replace most often show no unusual burden. That isn't the same as cheap, though: what you really spend depends on what you buy and how much you print.
Compare the base machine before comparing bundles
The P1S first went on sale on July 13, 2023, at $699, or $949 as a Combo with the AMS.[252] On November 3, 2026, Bambu's US store listed the printer at $349 on its own (normally $399). The Bambu Lab P1S AMS Combo was $479 (normally $549), and the AMS 2 Pro version $509 (normally $579). Deals and bundles change all the time, so compare the printer on its own and each bundle separately, including shipping and the seller's terms.[4][253]
Electricity is the small part
Everyday power draw is far below the 350 W maximum. As an example, assume a PLA print that averages 105 watts. At $0.186 per kilowatt-hour, that's 0.105 kW × $0.186 ≈ $0.02 per hour of printing. In other words, the electricity is the least of your costs. Filament and failed prints usually cost more, so plug in your own rates.
Maintenance and replacement parts
Routine P1S maintenance means checking the filament path and the nozzle wiper and cleaning the moving parts. On Bambu's schedule, you also grease the Z lead screws, the threaded rods that raise and lower the bed. Clean the carbon rods that carry the print head, but don't grease them.[7]
Parts you may end up replacing include the hotend, the extruder unit, nozzle wipers, PTFE (Teflon) tubing and the PEI build plate. Don't budget a fixed yearly bill; check Bambu's current parts list instead. Owners' reports of sudden first-layer trouble and a failed power-supply (AC) board show how different the needs can be, so budget for downtime as well as parts.[8][254]
Filament, multicolor and specialist materials
To give you a feel for it, a 100 g PLA part printed from a $20 one-kilogram roll uses about $2 of plastic, before supports, purge waste or failed attempts. Filament is sold by weight, and multi-roll or refill deals come with conditions; refills, for example, may need a reusable spool.
An AMS brings its own price and wear parts, and every color change throws away a little plastic. A standalone P1S printing PLA needs no AMS, no hardened nozzle and no new screen. The carbon filter it comes with is a part you replace over time, not a substitute for proper ventilation when you print ABS or ASA.[4][255][256]
Warranty and support
The P1S warranty depends on where you buy. In its October 2026 US-store sale announcement, Bambu Lab advertised a two-year printer warranty on purchases from its US store. Other sellers may offer less, and some wear and feeding parts have shorter cover.[257] One buyer of a damaged new P1S got a refund, which is a real remedy but doesn't make up for lost printing time. If you print paid orders, remember that a cheap part doesn't make a missed deadline cheap.[36][225][236][258][259][260]
Total-cost calculators give you scenarios, not your bill: the answer depends on the print hours, power draw, electricity rates and maintenance allowance you feed in. Used P1S printers do sell, but no source shows a typical drop in value over time, so leave resale out of any savings sums.[215][261]
Is Bambu's easy software worth giving up some control?
The 60-second verdict
MixedHow to read this ratingThis rating covers the software, the community, how open the system is and how often it's updated. A lower rating means a weaker or more closed ecosystem. It doesn't mean the hardware is faulty.
If a design library, desktop slicing and a phone app cover what you do, Bambu's all-in-one tools are a real convenience. You aren't forced into the cloud, and the evidence doesn't show that updates usually break printers. If you need unrestricted third-party control, access on a managed network or guaranteed support dates, confirm them before you buy.[88][6][262][263][264]
Find a design, tap print, hold the part: the P1S makes that loop feel easy, as long as you're happy living mostly inside Bambu's own tools. On one side you get handy design and remote-management tools; on the other, limits on third-party control and the occasional disruptive firmware update.[88][262][265]
Find a design, prepare it, print it
MakerWorld is Bambu's library of downloadable models. Some designs come with ready-made printer settings, so on your first night you can print a P1S project without making every decision yourself. Bambu reported roughly ten million monthly MakerWorld users in its 2025 results; those are company figures that show activity, not independent proof that it leads the field. Creator rewards encourage people to upload designs, but they don't guarantee anyone an income.[1][185][265][266][267]
The Bambu Lab P1S software centers on Bambu Studio, the desktop slicer, and Bambu Handy, the phone app for checking on and controlling prints remotely. Owners say remote access works, and Studio gets regular updates. If a printer won't join your Wi-Fi or your account during setup, that's a different problem, with a different fix, from one that keeps dropping its connection later.[200][264][268][269][270]
Third-party control comes with conditions
If you want to use OrcaSlicer (an alternative slicer), a smart-home dashboard or a separate controller, check what each one can actually do. Bambu's authorization changes block sensitive actions, like starting a print or changing settings, over ordinary cloud and local-network connections. Developer Mode is a setting that lets approved outside tools control the printer over your home network. It's a supported route, but it changes how you work and switches off parts of the cloud features.[200][6][262]
The Panda Touch, an aftermarket touchscreen, shows the difference between watching and controlling. Some firmware versions limited what it could command while monitoring kept working, and its maker suggests Developer Mode as the fix. Owners running add-ons admit they worry about future updates, though none has reported a broken setup. If customizing your printer is half the fun, check your accessory against the exact firmware version before you update.[6][271][272]
Updates and long-term support
Official P1S firmware updates bring maintenance, security changes and fixes. Some owners have had trouble after an update and followed community advice on stable versions, while other printers carried on as normal. When an update did cause problems, owners rolled back to the previous version through the Bambu Handy app. The simple rule: if your setup works, read the release notes and check your accessories before updating it.[88][89][273][274]
For UK buyers, Bambu's P1S compliance statement guarantees bug fixes and feature updates until July 13, 2028 and security patches until July 13, 2030. It covers only units sold in the UK, so check the terms where you buy.[275] When Bambu retired the P1P in February 2026, it said the P1S would keep being made and sold. It also promised P1P firmware updates through November 2027 and spare parts through 2031. That's encouraging, but it's a promise about the P1P, not the P1S.[88][263][276][277]
Cloud-free is not network-free
The P1S can print from a microSD card without the cloud, and local-network and Developer Mode routes exist for some controls. A live-status dashboard still needs the printer on your local network, though, and schools or offices with login pages or tightly managed Wi-Fi can make the first account setup awkward. Printing from a card, or using a separate approved network, may work better there.[6][278][279][280]
Bambu's Wiki, network guides and parts catalog give you ways to get help. One owner had a frustrating support exchange over their account and region, so check the terms for the region you buy in before you need to make a warranty claim. You should also know about two disputes. A P1S rebuilt with X1/X1E electronics ran into serial-number and firmware checks. And the Software Freedom Conservancy has challenged whether Bambu Studio complies with the AGPL open-source license. Neither is a final legal ruling.[36][281][282][283][284][285]
When another printer makes more sense
None of these were compared side by side for this guide, and prices change often, so confirm the current package and support terms before you buy.

For buyers who mostly print PLA and PETG and don't need an enclosure. Bambu's open-frame A1 has the same 256 mm build volume and cost $259 on its own, or $359 as a Combo with the AMS lite feeder, in Bambu's November 3, 2026 sale (regularly $299 and $399).[291]
Before you switchIt won't stand in for the P1S if you print ABS or ASA regularly, since those plastics benefit from an enclosure.
And if you need very fine detail for casting, certified medical parts or large structural pieces, no desktop filament printer is the answer. Change the type of tool instead.
Questions to settle before buying
Can a beginner get the P1S printing without building it?
Yes. It arrives mostly assembled and walks you through setup. Just allow time for the software, a suitable spot and your first test print.[4][45]
Can the Bambu Lab P1S print multiple colors?
Not automatically on its own. Automatic multicolor jobs need the optional AMS, so either buy a combo bundle that includes one or add an AMS later, and check exactly which bundle you're being offered.[4]
What is the P1S bed size?
The build volume is 256 × 256 × 256 mm, about 10 inches each way. That's the space for one printed object, not the size of the printer itself, and bigger projects have to be printed in pieces. The build plate itself is a removable, flexible steel sheet with a textured PEI coating.[15] Bambu Studio sets the default printable height to 250 mm to protect the bed; using the last 6 mm means following Bambu's safety instructions.[4]
Can I leave it printing next to my bed?
Better not. The fans and movement are clearly audible, and printing releases emissions you don't want to breathe all night. A separate, ventilated room is the practical choice.[3][242]
Which Bambu Lab P1S filament types need extra equipment?
Flexible TPU feeds from the external spool holder at the back rather than through the AMS. Abrasive plastics filled with fiber need hardened extruder gears and a suitable nozzle.[4][150]
Does it work with a third-party slicer, and how do I connect it to a PC?
Partly. Most people send jobs over Wi-Fi from Bambu Studio, or copy them to a microSD card. Some third-party and local-network setups work, but which controls you get depends on the firmware and the mode.[88]
How much electricity does it use?
Much less than you'd think: far below its 350 W maximum. P1S power consumption on a PLA print averages about 105 W, which costs roughly two cents an hour at $0.186/kWh; check your own rate.
How long does a P1S last?
There's no study on that yet. Owners report individual printers passing 1,800 hours with routine care, alongside documented part failures, so plan for maintenance and keep a backup if you have deadlines.
Is the P1S safe, and has one ever caught fire?
Two serious incidents stand out: smoke from an idle printer, with no cause found, and a glass door that shattered and later cut a child. Two more owners reported an electrical fire or a burning component, one shortly after a print and one during printing. None of these causes has been independently established, nobody knows whether they affect new units, and no P1S-specific recall has been found. Use the printer in a supervised, ventilated space and check current safety notices.[13][14][19][20]
Should I buy the P1S or the P2S?
Buy the P1S if saving money matters more to you than a touchscreen, a far better camera with AI checks, a quick-swap nozzle and hardened parts. Both print the same size parts. In Bambu's Black Friday sale on November 3, 2026, the gap was $100 for the printers on their own and $140 between the AMS 2 Pro Combos; at regular prices it is $150 and $170.[4][100]
How long will Bambu support the P1S?
For UK sales, Bambu guarantees bug fixes and feature updates until July 13, 2028 and security patches until July 13, 2030; check the terms where you buy. Bambu has also said it will keep making and selling the P1S.[263][275]
What should I inspect before buying a used P1S?
Its condition, maintenance history, included accessories and remaining support. Then do the math against a new one; sometimes the saving is smaller than it looks.[4]
Does the Bambu Lab P1S price cover every running cost?
No. The sticker price is only the start: add filament, electricity, wear parts and any AMS accessories, plus the cost of failed prints and repairs.[4]
The bottom line
Choose the P1S if you mostly print everyday plastic objects or prototypes and can give it a suitable room. It's the lowest-priced way into Bambu's enclosed printers, and setup is approachable. Add up materials, wear parts and any accessories before you call it good value. Look elsewhere if you need a quiet room or certified parts, or if the unresolved safety and reliability reports are more uncertainty than your home or business can live with.
